Nishi Padma (English: The night lotus) is a 1970 Indian Bengali language action drama film co-written and directed by Arabinda Mukhopadhyay. It is based on a short story Hinger Kochuri by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. Produced by Shantimoy Banerjee under the banner of Chirantan Chitra, it stars Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee and Anup Kumar in lead roles, while Nripati Chatterjee, Jahar Roy, Gita Dey and Gangapada Basu play another pivotal roles. The soundtrack album and background music of the film was composed by Nachiketa Ghosh, with lyrics penned by Gouriprasanna Mazumder. It revolves around Pushpa, whose uncle forcefully sells her to a brothel in Calcutta. On her first night there, an unhappy married man named Ananda falls in love with her over her singing abilities and decides to visit her regularly.
Nishi Padma was an all time blockbuster at the box office and successfully completed 210 days in theatres. Uttam Kumar, Anup Kumar and Sabitri Chatterjee received appreciation for their performances in the film. The album was chartbuster upon it's release, especially the song 'Aaj Raate Aar Jatra Shunte Jabo Na', sung by Manna Dey, became like a celebration among the masses. The film went on to win two awards at the 1970 National Film Awards: Manna Dey won Best Male Playback Singer for 'Ja Khushi Ora Bole Boluk' while Sandhya Mukherjee won the Best Female Playback Singer for 'Ore Sakol Sona Molin Holo'.
The film was remade in Hindi, Amar Prem (1972)[1] directed by Shakti Samanta, with screenplay by Arabinda Mukhopadhyay, and starring Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna in lead roles[2]

Reception[edit]
The film become all-time blockbuster and ran for 126 days in theaters. Uttam Kumar give another fabulous performance. Even Rajesh Khanna became impressed and inspired on Uttam's performance. He wrote that he watched the film 24 times to copy him.[5][6] This was the highest grossing Bengali film in 1970.
Remake[edit]
Shakti Samanta remade the film in Hindi in 1972 as Amar Prem, starring his regular stars Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. That film also become successful and earned cult status.[citation needed]
