Old nominations backlog[edit]

Per Thebiguglyalien's efforts to get us going through the backlog in previous edit-a-thons, I've compiled a list for this event. If you're looking for something to review for this event, but don't know where to start, consider starting here!

As we move towards the end of the month, I decided to uncomment the remainder of the pre-October backlog and re-order it a bit. Here I have sorted nominations into: "High importance", for countries that we haven't nominated or reviewed yet; "Mid importance", for countries that we have only nominated or reviewed once; and "Low importance", for countries with multiple nominations and/or reviews. --Grnrchst (talk) 13:34, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We're almost to the end of the edit-a-thon! We're currently 4 countries off meeting out goal, so if anybody is interested in taking on one of these high importance articles for review, now is the perfect time to do so! Welcome to our fifth GA editathon![edit]

Hello everyone -- welcome to WikiProject Women in Green's fifth Good Article (GA) editathon!

  • Before you get started, remember to check out both the event rules and instructions for beginning your GA project (whether as a GA nominator or reviewer). One important update from our previous events: GA nominations that are quickfailed will not be considered a qualifying article for this event for either the nominator or reviewer, but good faith nominations that are fully reviewed and failed will still qualify. We want to see solid work going towards improving these articles, so take your time.
  • Have questions about bringing an article up to GA standards? Start a new section on this talk page to chat with the group.

Would this make a good GA nomination?[edit]

I'd like to nominate Jolene Rickard. In a quick check with the copyvio tool located on the meetup page, I noted a copyvio. However -- it's a backwards copyvio, a website lifted content from Wikipedia. I'm sure, I wrote the article; I left a more detailed explanation on the talkpage today. Would it still be a good choice for a GA nomination, or would this confuse the issue too much? ☆ Bri (talk) 15:39, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Backwards copyvio is something that GA is generally aware of. Occasionally a reviewer might miss it and think it's regular copyvio, but it's something that can be addressed with a quick clarification. Right now the biggest obstacle would be the level of coverage; there's some debate over how small an article can be while still providing the required "broad coverage", but it's rare that an article with only a few hundred words meets it. Halfway point: Check-in[edit]

We're halfway through the month – and we've managed to cover at least 14 countries in our nominations and reviews so far! How is everybody doing? What are you working on? I'm working on expanding the article for Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk this week (Canada), and I've got my eye on one or two other articles. We have lots of existing GA nominations waiting for review right now, so if you've been thinking about jumping in and taking one on, now is a great time to do so. I've been swamped with traveling for my mom's 90th birthday and then home for our own anniversary, but am hoping to finish Japan Yoko Matsuoka. Depends on if the last critical source can be obtained and if George can get me the photos I want. The minute I discovered her, I wanted to tell her story, because she was a fearless critic of war and aggression, despite the fact that it impacted her career. Hm, damn. We have a book by that title, but a different subtitle: 1923-1983. A strange date to end an encyclopedia of the Showa Era, and no indication at all that this is a multivolume work. Since she falls into this period anyway, I'll order this book and see what I find. Hey all! I'm back from my self-imposed break and eager to contribute, although I'm still feeling rather unwell so will have to be cautious about that and try taking things easy. I currently have a few articles that I think are ready to go. Of the countries not currently covered, I can nominate Iran Ashraf Dehghani, Ukraine Olga Taratuta and Uzbekistan Saodat Ismailova. Of countries already covered, I may also consider nominating Brazil Maria Lacerda de Moura and Netherlands Carolina Bunjes, although again, I should try and take things easy. :P Hope everything has gone well so far with the edit-a-thon! Review swaps[edit]

I currently have four open nominations for this event that need reviewers. To help keep the backlog down (and maybe to work through my own long list of noms), I'll gladly review a nomination from anyone who wants to take on one of mine. I encourage everyone else to swap reviews with one another as well, since the GAN backlog has been rising and we've been a net increase on it. @MaterialWorks: Is Hilda Hilst your first nomination? I hope once that gets reviewed that it'll give you a bit of a window into what the process is like. Personally I only felt confident enough to start reviewing after I'd already had three or four nominations under my belt, so I understand the hesitancy. Hello @Grnrchst - Thank you for following up on the GA 20-minute-review submission. I did find the review process really helpful which gave me a decent idea of what goes behind a GA development. That being said, I won't be nominating the said article for this particular edit-a-thon as a lot of improvements are required. So I'll work on it in the future sometime. Hi @Grnrchst Thank you for checking up on this. The review process is helpful, as is the information and discussions around the meetup. Thank you and reviewer @Vanamonde93 for your help and support.
The article Amy Karle still needs a lot of work and is not ready for a GA nomination next week. I am a student editor and was trying to update it to GA standards. I had used Wikipedia guidelines and also referenced GAs whom are the articles' colleagues including Neri Oxman. I made good faith edits to improve the article, but it seems the article was in too bad of shape before I arrived. A more experienced editor since revamped the article.
I would still like to help improve the article. On the talk page, editors had referred to a "last good version": [here] from before coi concerns which I would like to draw from to replace some of the removed content. The areas that I would like to review and re-add are the sections on: Residencies, Awards, and "The Heart of Evolution" in the Major Works section. I would double check all info and make any necessary updates before re-adding. What do you think? I would appreciate your advice and suggestions. LWu22 (talk) 20:06, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Closing thoughts[edit]

I probably won't be doing much today, as I want to take some time off for the holiday. Just wanted to give my closing thoughts for the edit-a-thon, having nominated 6 articles and reviewed 11. I really ended up enjoying this one, I think more-so than previous wildcard edit-a-thons. The global theme forced me out of my editing comfort zone, so I ended up writing and reviewing articles I don't think I normally would have on my day-to-day, which itself was a wonderful exercise. Similar kinds of themed events might be the way to go for future edit-a-thons. One I had in mind was a more historical-focused one, as I noticed that only a handful of our nominations and reviews were about women from before the 20th century (credit to Moriwen and AirshipJungleman29 for submitting these).

Thanks Grnrchst! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It pushed me out of my comfort zone as well -- I'm reviewing a sports team article for the first time (Lebanon), so that was a challenge. A history-related theme could be fun in future... maybe some kind of "time travel" GA editathon, where we aim to cover multiple centuries? If anyone else has feedback or suggestions for future GA events, feel free to add it here to the thread.
As a wrap up, I also want to say to everyone: Congrats! Amazing work this month. :-) We covered 32 different countries and touched on all continents (excluding only the north/south poles), with a final total of 28 article nominations and 30 reviews. A few reminders for all participants:
  • Reviewers, please try to ensure that any remaining in-progress reviews are wrapped up by November 30th.

Alanna the Brave your efforts at organizing these are always amazing. I truly appreciate the efforts of all the reviewers and contributors. I managed in spite of all my real life complications to write 2 and review 1, which seems pale in comparison. Grnrchst your urging, although I do always try to write about women globally, made me look specifically for women in Asia involved in the anti-war movement and I learned so much. I am working on a women's organization that was affiliated with the Eastern bloc, Latin America, Africa, and Asia and I am hoping that it will both present a much clearer picture of the 20th century women's movements and be an anchor article to discover many more women to write about. DIY nomination versus selection[edit]

Of the current eight Did you know... hooks on the Main Page, seven are about men and one is about a book written by a woman and a man. Meanwhile, multiple DIY nominations of articles about women passed as good articles during this event are awaiting selection.
