mobile variant css formatting

Thanks so much for your work on Template:Intro to single/styles.css. I'm trying to update Template:Intro_to/sandbox at the moment and I just wanted to check what the following bit of code does:

@media screen and (min-width: 1101px) {
	.introtosingle__main {
		max-width: 1100px;
	}
}

Do you know if there's away to specify different CSS when on a mobile screen? In particular, on mobile for the left-hand menu items: 1) omitting vertical padding between the menu items and 2) omitting their subtitles. Is there a way to implement the equivalent of:

.mw-parser-output .onlymobile {
    display: block;
}

Evolution and evolvability, "what the following bit of code does:" When the screen is 1101pixels or wider, limit the width of introtosingle__main to 1100pixels (instead of the default to make it as wide as required to fit the content (aka auto)). Note I chose these pixel values because i wanted to preserve the width that was set in the original version of the template, which was 1100pixels.

"different CSS when on a mobile screen" I just explained one ☝️. In general it is best not to assume a device, instead just work with the available width and adapt the styling based on that (viewport width breakpoints). Perfect - thank you! Very good point about basing it on display size rather than device. That way if put in a narrow window on a desktop display it'd make itself similarly compact for readability to how it would on a phone, whereas on a large tablet, it'd still make use of the available space. I think I've managed to get something sensible working at Template:Intro_to/styles.css. If you have a moment to cast an eye over the changes in behaviour at 1100px and 800px screen width I'd be intersted in your throughts. Lang titlepart

Gonnym, must have not used it correctly: {{lang titlepart|ja|Japanese text}}: "{{lang titlepart|ja|Japanese text}}". The purpose is to use this inside {{DISPLAYTITLE}} usages, when you want to markup a single word inside a title as being in a foreign language. responsiveContent

Howdy TheDJ - Through a process of elimination I discovered that responsiveContent was causing the problem seen in the image to the right—I'm not sure what to call it. Wordwrap (text wrap) not working? Or margins? Image placement? - I'm sure you'll know! Main point is it made it really hard to read the text to the left of the table.

Emptying comon.css?

Hey, TheDJ, I saw on the thread at Mediawiki talk:Common.css#CSS_to_left_align_the_text_in_the_first_column_of_a_table where you said that we are trying to empty this file. I am absolutely not disputing that, it squares with everything I've seen on that page, but is there a discussion or decision you can point to where that choice was made? Timeshifter is being...insistent about it, and I feel that being able to point them to writing that says, "try not to add things to common.css" might be helpful, if it exists. Writ Keeper, there is a longstanding convention upheld by the MediaWiki:Common.css maintainers to add as little CSS as possible. There is also longstanding convention to prefer inline styles (and later TemplateStyles) over classes being added to MediaWiki:Common.css. These are simply logical conclusions from the fact that any CSS on site wide CSS pages gets delivered on every single pageview, regardless of wether they are needed by that page. I'm not sure if that was ever documented.

But one of the whole points of TemplateStyles was to find a way to address this problem. See also mw:Help:TemplateStyles#What_problems_does_it_solve?. Unfortunately en.wp has a LOT of legacy. So 4 years later and important constructs like mbox, infobox, navbox still make use of Common.css, simply because trying to change that is so much work and is likely to result in so many angry comments by those who only care about the tiny breakages and not the technical details, that this transition is still far from over.

Timeshifter is right that TemplateStyles are not entirely ideal in this situation, as tables are often used without templates. So it is a bit silly to have to put a templatestyles tag inside the wiki text directly to fix this. However, it is the best we have. Wrap the template styles in a separate {{table alignment classes}} that people can include just before the table and I think you also have a decent fix. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 11:44, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello! I tried this script a few years back and was not able to get it to work. Tried it again today and had the same issue. I've tried changing skins in case that was a conflict. PerfektesChaos decorated, and positioning of coordinates

However, I will put an image of the giveaway on my awards page and wear a virtual shirt.

While deWP is attempting to solve a similar problem, I happened to dig in enWP gutts.

At phab:T91481 #2451920 you wrote in 2016: the coordinates template should never be restricted to such a “top” spot, but should also have an appropriate corresponding inline position
I learnt that it’s official policy at enWP to show regular coordinates and map link inside article contents, and use the thing in the top right corner as duplicate only.
The thing is clipped away in mobile skin.
- Almost 60 % of accessing enWP article space pages for reading view seem to use mobile.
- On sightseeing it is most valuable to read the article of next monument, get the map, indicated your position and see that there are less than 200 steps to walk. Bad fate if no map link is available on cell phone.
For future desktop skin development content area is supposed to be clipped for security reasons.
- By accident or vandalism an element in content may leak, perhaps covering the entire viewport. Transparent layer preferred. Then interface links cannot be accessed any longer.
I was astonished to find apparently a quarter million of articles with top right corner display=title only (multiple attempts depending on server load gave >260,000 matches).
- They might result from early insertions like this one at year 1 before the mobile era.
- It might be an idea to arrange a box at page bottom with explanation, data, map links.
- An indicator icon might replace data in top right corner and link to the box at page bottom, or any other place (infobox) where geo is available for this parcular page.
- According to WP:ORDER page coordinates are to be written at page bottom already.
- However, there is no warranty that all authors transcluded exactly there. Some bot runs and dump analysis is to be taken before a transclusion can be turned into display=inline and a box is drawn around. In the long run the title option and the entire display parameter could be obsoleted. However, as you wrote in 2016: will show up in unexpected places inside articles, because people never figured the template would show any content
You may put this issue on appropriate rails. It’s not my business, but you might trigger a maintenance operation.

Hello there, TheDJ! I am writing to you because a new WMF project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW), is about to start.

SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet.

@FriedhelmW I'll try to take a look, but that thing is soooo old.. it seems there has been a php update and I don't think I'll feel like rewriting all the mysql calls to make this ancient tool work again.. Ok, can you also give me a sanity check on this: now it's possible to arbitrarily format dates in JS per user timezone, and the only bug that arises would be a 1-hour error when we're talking about an event on the other side of the DST switchover. Right? (Apologies if that's obviously correct or obviously wrong, but i live in a DST-free country so I'm not used to thinking about this :)) – SD0001 (talk) 18:21, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

That seems like a correct representation to me. The preferred way would still be to take the full timezone identifier and apply that to the date you want to show, to avoid the other problem as well. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:45, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
