The species is named after H. W. Bell-Marley who collected the original specimen, a single half-grown male. Afroedura marleyi is known as Marley se Platgeitjie in Afrikaans [1]
Description[edit]
Colour. Above, greyish white with a brownish tinge; a series of six dark brown irregular wavy bands over body and occiput; a dark streak on either side of head, running from nostril through eye, above the ear and fading out just anterior to the shoulder; irregular infuscation on head; ventrally, dirty white to creamish. Reproduced section of tail with irregular dark spots dorsally.
Dimensions. Head and body 30,5 mm. Length of head 8,0 mm. Tail 25,0, Breadth of head 6,5
Distinguishing features [2]
- Original tail rounded or weakly flattened, not or faintly verticilate
- Dorsal scales smooth, rounded to flattened :dorsal scales not imbricate
- Internasal present: scale separating large nasals similar size to immediately adjacent scales
- Adults < 40 mm SVL
- Precloacal pores in males 10–14; midbody scale rows 88–99
Discussion. The above-described species seems to be closely allied to O. pondolia Hewitt, and may eventually prove to be only a subspecies thereof. Distribution records of Oedura species in the Transvaal Museum collection.
