Plot and characters

The "Leap of Faith" Marty makes at the beginning of the flim is a paraody of a similar leap in the earlier Dreamworks moive Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Content deleted

It is little bigger than a mouse, with short, rounded ears and a white stripe on its nose." Mort fits the description to a T. I looked it up without using his name -- it missleads the search-engine. Not convinced about Mort's species type

Despite the addition of the new citation that supposedly demonstrates that Mort is a Goodman's Mouse Lemur, I'm not entirely convinced. The source is from film.com, not something I would consider a reliable source. For all we know, the brief mention of Mort as a Goodman's Mouse Lemur could have been come from a reviewer who looked here on Wiki for more information. Can no one come up with a better source? Wouldn't it just be better to refer to Mort as a Mouse lemur, since distinguishing between the 16 species outside of the academic world (and especially in the academically-challenged Hollywood circle) is not likely to be accurate? –Visionholder (talk) 19:36, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Okay, I decided to see if I could get to the bottom of this, and here is what I found: I have only found 2 websites that mention why people think Mort is a Goodman's Mouse Lemur—one on bebo.com (a blog) and one on allexperts.com (another online encyclopedia). Both say exactly the same thing, character for character: "Mort the Lemur -- rounded ears and a white stripe on his nose show him to be a Goodman's Mouse Lemur." Regardless of which came first, it appears the author of one of these two pages made their own personal assesment, possibly using online pictures of mouse lemurs, like those found here on Wiki. From there, it looks like it took off and started popping up all over fan sites and blogs, eventually turning into "Internet FACT" (if something gets posted on enough blogs and fan sites, then it has to be true!!). Let me just say that as someone who studies lemurs and who has worked hands-on with mouse lemurs, the "rounded ears and a white stripe on his nose" do NOT demonstrate that Mort is a Goodman's Mouse Lemur. Consider this Gray Mouse Lemur photo that I helped take. Also, if you look in "Lemurs of Madagascar" (2nd ed., p. 94-96) by Mittermeier, et al., you'll see that all the mouse lemurs match that description. For this reason, unless someone can produce a source that comes directly from DreakWorks studio that states otherwise, I am considering this information to be hearsay and consequently false. Therefore, I am changing the reference to Mort to read "Mouse lemur" instead of "Goodman's Mouse Lemur". Penguins and Alex

The penguins were not stowed away on board. (When using stowed as 'To hide oneself aboard a conveyance in order to obtain free transportation.') I reworded it to show that they were also being shipped to Kenya (why penguins would be shipped to Kenya is beyond me but after viewing the film again, the box that the penguins are in says Penguins and has a shipping lable to the wildlife preserve in Kenya). Also Alex is concerned about himself rather than the group when facing the celebrity status of Shamu. --ImmortalGoddezz (talk) 22:26, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Worst films of 2005 by... who?

"Madagascar is considered one of the worst films of 2005 according to the International Ratings of Filming Trust (IRFT)." This seems a little out-of-nowhere; I've done searches on this 'IRFT' and got no results, or anything even resembling them... even the name sounds like it's not resembling any real organization. Foosa or fossa?

Since the spelling of this word keeps getting changed between the actual animal (fossa) and the spelling used in the movie (foosa), let's just make a template. That way, when someone wants to change the spelling, they'll only have to change it in the template and they'll get all of the wording in one fell swoop. You would be correct if this were an article about the animal called fossa. However, this is an article about the film Madagascar. We should document that this film spells the name of the animal incorrectly, but then state that the spelling in this article is going to use that as used in the film. --Val42 (talk) 19:41, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Same as Val42 and, the sign says "BEWARE OF FOOSA" in the movie. If the correct spelling of foosa is fossa, that doesn't mean the sign said "BEWARE OF FOSSA" rather than "BEWARE OF FOOSA". I reverted the vandalism as well as the "foosa" change. Reading the fossa (animal) article, it seems obvious this is the animal intended to be portrayed in the film. I, too, remember seeing a sign that read "BEWARE OF FOOSA"; but I would take this as comedic license indicating the indigenous lemurs can't spell. I can remember many cartoons that portray misspelled signs that have been created by the creatures/animals in the cartoon; it would never be assumed that a misspelled sign was meant legitimately to infer a completely different meaning than the properly spelled word -- simply that our characters can't spell. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 19:43, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

King Julian

While tagging some articles I found King Julian. As that article is linkless, and it doesn't seem to be notable to have its own article, I suggest merging any valuable content here. Someone who is in touch with this article and knows the importance of the character should be able to decide if that article has something to offer that has not been said here. Deletion proposal

The inaccuracies section should be deleted; it's totally superfluous, like pointing out that lions can't talk, penguins don't normally carry lit sticks of dynamite, and zebras as a matter of course don't set up cabana bars. Is Alex's acid trip accurate? Was there enough snow on the ground in Antarctica? Popculture references

It seems I am getting into a editfight with someone about the section of popculture references. This is not my intention, my goals are sincere and I will explain here why I deleted some of the adds.

Just because the IMdB has them listed as references does not mean they are intented. See where I'm getting at? The IMdB doesn't have any sources either, so to say that they are listed on that website does not mean they are needed here.

I hope I made myself clear. If there are any conflicts, I suggest we take it up to resolving disputes. WP:DR

Critical Response

I removed the IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes ratings. The mention of mixed reviews (along with popular appeal and box office take) should be enough--there's no need to include info from other sites which is subject to change anyway, right? --Maxrandom777 (talk) 02:13, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I put the reviews back in for three reasons: they are not subject to change, vaguely saying "mixed reviews" does not give the reader of the article an accurate picture of the film's standing, and the review information has remained unchanged since the article was created, so I see no reason to delete it now. --Justanotherguy (talk) 02:15, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

The "inaccuracies" section

I took this off the main page because it seems ridiculous to point out these facts in an animated film. "Chimpanzees aren't monkeys"? "A giraffe can't bend its neck in every direction"? They also can't speak English and sing "I Like to Move It, Move It," but it's called suspension of disbelief! So for posterity's sake, I'm leaving this section here.

Factual Inaccuracies

  • Fossa do not hunt in packs.
  • Lemur troops are usually led by a female.
  • Lemurs don't form multi-species troops.
  • Hummingbirds don't live in Madagascar.
  • Saguaro cactuses are not found in Madagascar.
  • The nearest current to Madagascar tends to flow in a counterclockwise direction, so in real life Marty, Melman, Alex, and Gloria, would end up in either Pakistan or India.
  • A giraffe cannot bend its neck in every direction. If one tried, it would break its neck.
  • Adelie penguins don't live in Africa. This was mentioned by Skipper and is probably a joke.
  • The Central Park Zoo does not own or house lions, giraffes, zebras or hippopotamuses. To see these animals in New York City visitors have to visit the Bronx Zoo instead.
  • Chimpanzees aren't monkeys.
  • There are no restrooms in in that area on the downtown 4,5,6 Lexingtion line subway station.

Notable roles

Two IP addresses (possibly the same editor) have added "notable roles" to the cast information and I've removed this both times. If anyone wants to know what the actors have also appeared in, they can check the articles about the actors. It's information overload to include in that table other films that they have appeared in. The choice of other work could be controversial, with different editors disagreeing about which other films should be mentioned. Suggestion of alternate reference

In the "Allusions and parody" section, I do not agree with the proposed reference (second to last) about the line "It's been a pleasure serving with you, boys"... I believe this line is a reference to the film Titanic, when the musicians are playing during evacuation of the boat and must stop because of the high raising level of the water "Gentlemen. Madagascar (2005 film) → Madagascar (film) – The 1994 film has had 234 views, compared to 10645 for the 2005 film. I think it could hardly be more obvious that anyone typing in "Madagascar (film)" would be seeking out the 2005 DreamWorks film, and not a far more obscure 1994 property of the same name. And if they're looking for the sequels, or the franchise as a whole, then those are already linked from the 2005 film's article. There has been several discussions on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (films), and move discussions throughout this year like here and here, that a disambiguation phrase in parentheses that solely consists of the word "film" is still ambiguous and vague, even though one of the films may have significantly more recent traffic. WP:NCF#Between films of the same name has been changed accordingly to read, "For the other films (or all the films, if none of them are the primary topic), add the year of its first verifiable release ... S/he would likely type something like "Madagascar", "Madagascar film", or "Madagascar movie" either using Google or the Wikipedia search function and would then be lead to this article through the country page or a Google or Wikipedia search results page. Using "(film)" as disambiguator makes this process no easier than using "(2005 film)" as a disambiguator. Home Media Release/Edit Request 1/19/14

When was Madagascar released on DVD and VHS? I do know that it was Dreamworks Animation last CGI film on VHS but not the last overall. The last Dreamworks Animation VHS was Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which came out onto DVD and VHS on February 7, 2006. However, I can't edit the page because don't know the home media release date and the page is protected from vandalism.
