Collaborative map for Europe of the Peoples ?[edit]

Where is such a map located and where/how can I participate in such a map. I'd like to add the often missing group of the Chameria-Albanians living between Albania and Greece. Thank you. --SvenAERTS (talk) 22:18, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Participatory GIS[edit]

It has been proposed to merge the entry on Participatory GIS with collaborative mapping. Please note that as intended PGIS is a practice, of which Participatory Mapping (better than Collaborative Mapping) is a step/ingredient. The term PGIS is widely and increasingly used among development practitioners and researchers to define a practice which is not necessarily linked to web based mapping. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iapad (talkcontribs) 13:38, 19 October 2008 (UTC) I concur. Participatory GIS, Public Participation GIS, and Participatory Mapping define well-established practices, suite of methods/tools, and area of research for engaging and empowering local communities through mapping and geospatial technology. These have been developed over the last 30+ years both in the international development community (rapid rural appraisal and participatory appraisal methods) and U.S. land use planning community. These may overlap with but are distinct from volunteered geographic information (coined four years ago by leading researcher Mike Goodchild), community remote sensing, participatory sensing, and collaborative mapping, which focus more on crowdsourcing via social media tools. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.171.145.161 (talk) 15:43, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • agree with above. VGI is a separate, well established concept and term within professional and academic geography/GIS circles. It should *not* be merged with "collaborative mapping" as many contributers to VGI platforms may not even be conscious, or give much importance to, the geographic context of their contribution. A good example of this is contributors to Ushahidi, a VGI based on SMS, who may not have awareness, or even care about the geographic significance of their contributions. • I agree as well that they should not be merged. Mapping is one thing you might want to do with VGI, but there are others (graphs and other visualizations, statistical analyses). Also, along the lines of the last comment, collaboration may ultimately be arranged in some uses of VGI but may not particularly be the intent of contributors satchinsb (21:53, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MapWith.us[edit]

This article initially did not properly define collaborative mapping and needed a rewrite which I provided. I added an excellent example of collaborative mapping: MapWith.Us, this was NOT for promotion. Someone keeps taking references to MapWith.Us out of this article. Having developed and worked with mapping tools for over a decade, I can vouch that this is not random promotion, it's an excellent example of collaborative mapping. Please leave the reference to MapWith.Us in this article, it adds value. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.210.40.100 (talk) 17:15, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's because your edits have been almost entirely about promoting MapWith.us in what appears to be a concerted attempt along with several other accounts to increase the company's exposure on Wikipedia. This is not in keeping with our neutral point of view or policy our policy against advertising. Especially as MapWith.us is not yet a significant player in this market place it is inappropriate to sprinkle it through articles in this way. I've removed it again. Please stop trying to fit into every article you edit. -- SiobhanHansa 18:01, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So apparently you decide who's a major player ... If you knew anything about this subject, you would realize mapwith.us is the only player that uses overlays for collaboration. Your "sprinkling" comment is not appreciated, since it took time and effort to update articles with recent information concerning the mapping industry. It's not my fault mapwith.us has the latest innovations in this area. Please reinsert mapwith.us and apologize. It’s the right thing to do and you know it. At this point I think you’re just upset I called you on this. If you want wikipedia to be outdated, then continue with your rude behavior. BTW there are no other accounts ... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.210.40.100 (talk) 21:06, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've laid out the actions I see as a concerted effort to promote MapWith.Us at WT:WPSPAM#MapWith.Us and asked for other opinions. It's not my intention to be rude to you and I'm sorry that I came across that way. I'm simply trying to uphold some of our policies on content. -- SiobhanHansa 21:30, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point of view, my efforts may have seemed like promotion. However, MapWith.Us just happens to be the product that embodies several innovations in the mapping industry. Having used several tools over the years, I was excited to update these articles with information concerning these innovations. I chose several articles that needed updating and used a link to MapWith.Us as a reference to demonstrate that this technology has actually been implemented. No doubt MapWith.Us will be gobbled up by one of the mapping giants, but just because you’re big … doesn’t mean you’re the best. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.210.40.100 (talk) 21:44, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge with VGI[edit]

Volunteered Geographic Information seems to be a neologism that means the same thing as this. I agree they should be merged. --TMC1221 (talk) 13:30, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Volunteered Geographic Information is an established term in the GIS community, it should not be merged into this article! The term also has a difference emphasis (not just maps but any geocoded information) --Vzach (talk) 13:27, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Objects in maps always assign attributes to a geolocation. Attributes can be URIs that refer to video or image e.g. captured at the geolocation or are relevant to a geolocation. Disaster management can use a collaborative mapping approach to assign that attributes to a hospital as Point of Interest (e.g. destroyed by earth quake). --Bert Niehaus (talk) 10:10, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sharemap[edit]

I quite agree that we've got too many articles for almost the same thing, but perhaps at least one should mention [1]. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:14, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
