Why is this page locked?

I had an affair with Bob for three years and have factual, non-inflammatory, non-controversial facts to add he is horrible and yet there's no way to do that when it sucked like that!

i love me my tacos and peanut butter. Protecting people causes the site to be outdated. Like you know...an encyclopedia. Doesn't "locking" pages defeat the whole purpose of the "masses" agreeing on the real truth? Why does Wikipedia even allow this? They let anybody simply post their slanted version of things, then allow them to lock it... this seems totally against the Wikipedia concept.

Sometimes a Wikipedia page becomes the target of heavy vandalism, especially by anonymous (IP) users, so that the page has to be protected to reduce the vandalism to a manageable level. At this level of protection, users who have been registered for four days or less are also restricted from editing. The reason for that is that sometimes anonymous users, finding that a page is protected against anons, will create a throwaway account solely for the purpose of vandalizing a page. If you can wait four days and make a few productive edits, then you will be able to edit this page. ●DanMS 03:57, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

If a page is popular enough to attract vandals, then it is popular enough to attract non-vandals as well who will remove it. You responded to my post within 10 minutes of my making it, for example. That's the reason for the success of "Wikipedia" and why it generally contains truthful, useful information: people who actually know a given topic or have first-person information to contribute can quickly add it. These people have "lives" and don't care to sit around waiting to audition for the right to edit some topic. So when you lock a page to allow only Wikipedia "nerds" to edit (no offense...), you're limiting it to a subset that especially in this case are most likely not to have any useful, first-person information. That's completely self-defeating! And in my case I had tried to make a "throwaway" nick for the sole purpose of trying to contribute useful information! I can't be the only one out there. I believe you self-appointed elite group, whoever you are, should really rethink your position on locking this page. Limiting contributions to just a select few, especially for non-political or controversial pages like this, is simply not the idea behind the Wikipedia concept! No offense taken. You should realize that the protection is for the sake of improving Wikipedia by limiting the amount of vandalism found on a page. The subset of users to which you refer really constitutes the vast majority of registered users and cannot be considered the “elite.” The only registered users who are prohibited from editing a page such as this are those users who have been registered for less than four days. I agree entirely with SlappyMcB's arguments above, the strength of Wikipedia is in its wide and varied contributions by a number of occasional users who do not have the time to hover breathlessly over each and every change. In fact there seem a large number of Wiki-nerds who right vandalism the moment it occurs. What is the longest period any vandalism remained on this page before it was corrected? Further, I take issue with the description of the so-called anonymous unregistered contributor. In fact, it seems to me the editor who _registers_ is relatively more anonymous, as no IP is visible. With an IP, you have at least a location of the editor and often this number links edits, particularly for static IPs, the majority of broadband users now. Registered users often have no front page indicating who they are or anything about them, and as you cannot see an IP, you don't even know where they are. No matter. It is indeed a fansite, although I agree it is not your typical fansite. The reason I started the church is because I am a huge fan of him. Also, while there are probably other fansites out there, I belive I am the only one willing to buy a domain to host it.

No articles display warnings per Wikipedia:No disclaimer templates. I understand what you are trying to say here, but censoring for the sake of children is something that really rubs me the wrong way. What's flawed about your argument is that Bob Saget IS a very vulgar comedian. This isn't like we're pointing out something that's rare. Any child doing research on Bob Saget is very likely to come across his comedic material, quotes, or some other direct example of his comedy. An example of his use of vulgar words is actually appropriate on this article. Such warning tags are deleted when found, but I do not doubt we haven't found them all. The only warning tags that are viewed as acceptable (and even that is sometimes disputed) are spoiler tags. I understand you think that removing the quote doesn't hurt the article. The picture needs to be changed!

Someone has been changing the picture from a picture of Bob Saget to a picture of a schoolteacher, whose name I am keeping confidential. This was amusing the first time I saw it, but I think the picture would be more appropriately placed in an article on the schoolteacher, rather than in an article on a comedian. If you want additional evidence... look at the poster in the background. It is marked, "Daily Schedule," and has a list of class periods. Plus, he teaches at a school I am aquainted with, and is sporting his usual 'green shirt + sweater' get up. I too am not convinced that the picture is not of Bob Saget. Wikipedia has a high standard of journalistic integrity, and I hope this page doesn't turn into some sort of a flame war.

I don't understand. Why do you insist on replacing a pic that might not even be him? What does the article gain? I understand that you uploaded the picture and you'd like to see it remain in the article, but the editor above raised a concern, and I agree that there may be something to that concern. For example, in the pic's summary you state "Photograph of Bob Saget during a stand-up comedy routine taken with a Motorola Razr V3i Cameraphone" and it doesn't appear to match the photograph. Because it's disputed. Editors have voiced concerns, and your only response is that you can't imagine a schoolteacher looking like that. Page protection

I've been watching this article a while now to help revert vandalism, but for some reason the article has been protected and most of it's content has been removed. What gives? Alkivar has stated in his revert that sources are required. This is true, but it's kind of impossible to do that if you've protected the page. Content such as this was removed:

"On America's Funniest Home Videos Bob Saget was virtually the entire cast. He was seen on-camera, introducing video clips of accident-prone people and amazing animals. He was also heard as a voice-over performer, narrating or supplying funny voices for these same clips. The scripted material that Saget had to read for the studio audience was often embarrassingly weak (causing some viewers to unfairly blame Saget himself for the low humor content), but he was very inventive and witty in the voice-overs, often indulging in celebrity impersonations, dialect humor, and clever puns."

The last sentence there is likely OR, and should go, but the first part is something anyone who watched America's Funniest Home Videos would know, and a citation of the show or some kind of review would have done the job.

Another section removed was about the movie he directed about his sister, called For Hope. The movie article's one reference (yeah, another thing to fix) doesn't point to a specific page, but as soon as you visit it you'll find the direct pages that talk about Saget's involvement.

Protecting the article is an overreaction, and prevents any of us from adding the required citations. -- Ned Scott 20:24, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Ah, I see what you are talking about. It's probably a bit of undue weight to take that one special he did and start plastering the three quotes on it. Here's a raw dump of what I removed:

Actually, "That Ain't Right" wasn't funny _at all_. It's a total piece of crap. There's no substance whatsoever in his humor; just awkwardly overused profanity/vulgarity. His whole bit is centered around shocking people who wouldn't expect the nice old dad from Full House to swear so much in real life. There is literally nothing else to it. Bob Saget is the very definition of "painfully unfunny", and an embarrassment to the entire art form. That said, I would refrain from listing quotes from specific reviews on this page (except perhaps one or two for illustrative purposes). Could somebody please change the first part of this sentence "His HBO comedy special That Ain't Right came out on DVD on August 28, 2007 which is dedicated to his father, Ben Saget, who passed away on 30 January 2007 due to complications from congestive heart failure. He was 89." It should read "His HBO comedy special That Ain't Right, which came out on DVD on August 28, 2007, is dedicated to his father,..." Saget's childhood home

Bob Saget did NOT grow up in Lexington, Virginia. He moved from the Philadelphia area to Norfolk, Virginia, then Encino, California, and back to suburban Philly in time to finish high school. This reliable source says so. So does this one. This interview quotes him directly as saying, "my bar mitzvah was in Philadelphia, because we had no family in Norfolk, so I didn't have any friends at my bar mitzvah, which kind of bummed me out."

So just how did Wikipedia come up with the idea that he lived in Lexington? Let's take a look back.

Saget's article has apparently been vandalized repeatedly over the years, and the spring of 2006 was no exception. Up until April 2006 his childhood was basically "born in Philly, graduated from Abington High, went to Temple." Then came this edit on April 3 by an IP user, who made the unsourced claim in the first sentence of the article that Saget "moved to Munster, Indiana when he was two." This April 7 edit moved the claim to the second paragraph, where Saget's education was discussed.

This edit on April 18 made Saget a student at Munster High School. The IP that did this made exactly two other edits the same day, vandalizing the Abington High and Munster High articles. Another IP user tried to remove the Munster references on April 20, but this edit was undone by a regular editor who was trying to deal with a bombardment of Saget vandalism.

On April 24, an IP user at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia moved Saget from Munster to Lexington and from Munster High School to Rockbridge County High School. This claim has remained in the article, undocumented, since then.

As someone further up this talk page observed, Rockbridge County High School opened in 1992, by which time Saget was 36 and midway through his runs on Full House and America's Funniest Home Videos. If Saget had lived in Lexington as a kid, he would have gone to the now-closed Lexington High School instead.

This claim has migrated outward from Wikipedia since then. It appears on all the numerous Wiki mirror sites, so it shows up a lot in Google searches. It has made it into the trivia section of Saget's IMDB page. Someone created a fake Bob Saget Myspace page in August 2006 giving "Lexington, Virginia" as his hometown. (The real Saget page is here.)

In the small town of Hemlock there is a guy by the name of Chad, who is referred commonly as Bob Saget. The popular nickname was brought on the successful t.v. series of Full House, in which Bob Saget played a caring father with quirky sense of humor. When Chad was younger the name was only thought to be temporary but as the popularity of the show and Chad's age increase his likeliness to the t.v. sensation took new ground. Like Bob Saget, Chad is a tall 18 year old about 6ft in height. The nickname has been both a blessing and a curse for Chad, but for the better part of his life he's stuck it out. Bob Saget has been a role model to the youth of America, whether positive or not. What is known about other children who may have the nickname of Bob Saget is unknown. What gave Chad his nickname of Bob Saget? Was it the nose, the height, or just his personality?
