From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reza de Wet (11 May 1952 – 27 January 2012) was a South African playwright.

Reza de Wet was born in Senekal in the Free State of South Africa. She is known for her contributions to South African theater.[1][2][3][4][5][6] After graduating from the University of Cape Town drama school,[7][8] she worked as an actress, obtained a master's degree in English literature, and lectured in the drama department of Rhodes University in Grahamstown

She wrote twelve plays in fifteen years (five in English and seven in Afrikaans). She won nine awards for her scripts (five Vita Awards, three Fleur du Cap Awards, one Dalro Award), as well as literary awards (one CNA Prize, one Rapport Prize, and two Hertzog Prizes), and productions of her plays have won more than 40 theater awards. Her play Yelena won the Vita Award for Best Script in 1998-1999 and Drie Susters Twee (an Afrikaans translation of theThree Sisters, Part 2) was named Best Production for the same year.

She won several theater and literary awards, including the Herzog Prize for Drama (one of the most prestigious awards for Afrikaans literature) on two occasions. In Open Space, an anthology of new African plays, she is the only woman represented.

Reza de Wet was active at the Market Theater in Johannesburg, an institution critical of apartheid. Her seminal work, Diepe Grond (African Gothic), which debuted there was a j'accuse on the moral decay of the country's racist policies. [9] A feature film based on Diepe Grond (WHITE DEVILS) was adapted for the screen by Gabriel Bologna in 2024. [10]

Reza de Wet died from leukaemia at her home on 27 January 2012.[11]
