British Sserium is governed by the British Ssireum Federation, the federation was founded in 2013, when the first known British Team was selected to attend the World Ssireum Championships in Frankfurt, Germany.[1]
The squad consisted of 4 athletes, Jason Moran, Adam Lloyd, plus two South Korean expatriates residing in the UK, Myung Jin Jung and Jeong Jae Kim. The lead official for the team was Do Soon Chang.
Results of the 2013 World Championship (British Athletes)
• Jason Moran reached the quarter finals (last 8) in the +90kg class, losing to eventual bronze medallist, Gio Koberidze of Georgia • Adam Lloyd reached the last 16 in the -90kg class, losing to eventual bronze medallist, Antti Faven of Finland • Myung Jin Jung reached the quarter finals (last 8) in the -80kg class losing to Hwang Kyu Yeon of Spain • Jeong Jae Kim lost in the bronze medal match in the -70 kg class to Thomas Kool from the Netherlands.
The countries represented at the World Championships were: Great Britain, South Korea, China, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
There was no World Championships held in 2014
Great Britain were invited to the following 2015 World Championships in Myanmar (Burma), but were unable to send a team due to cost, British Ssireum receive no government funding.
The World Ssireum Federation est 2008 under Mr Yoon Myung Sik, stopped operations in 2015. [1]
The British Ssireum players kept in contact with the Korea Ssireum Association [2] with the hope of keeping British Ssireum alive. A small Ssireum presence continued in Great Britain over the coming years.
In 2020 Mr Jaehoon Ban made contact with British Ssireum and offered to help support the team. Through the dedicated work of Jaehoon and members of the squad British Ssireum is stronger than ever.
The squad has competed in the last two additions of the International Withuspharm Cheonha-Jangsa Festival in South Korea.
The 2022 Squad was: Official Kevan Mellor, Head Coach Courtney Pflasterer, athletes Jason Ball, Reece Gath and Tom Sandford
The 2023 Squad was: Head Coach and Official Courtney Pflasterer, athletes Sonny Bell, Joe Brammer and Chris Brammer
